• GOAL is looking for an assistant country director, systems for Ethiopia, an assistant country director, operations for Sudan, a logistics officer for Kenya, and logistics coordinators for Sierra Leone and Uganda.
• MERLIN is looking for a logistician for their programmes in Kenya and Somalia (based in Nairobi) and a logistics coordinator for Sudan. They’re also still looking for logistics coordinators for ‘Africa’; perhaps somebody should explain to them that Africa is not a country.
• Solidarités is looking for logistics coordinators for Kenya/Somalia, Chad, and the Central African Republic; a base manager/logistician for Bunia (DRC); an administrative/logistics coordinator for Zimbabwe; and a base manager/logistician/administrator for Walikalé (DRC).

• Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF) are looking for an administration, finance and logistics officer for Uganda.
• ACTED are looking for a country logistics manager for Pakistan, a logistics intern for the Central African Republic, and a logistician/security manager for Haiti. They also seem to have extended their deadlines for the vacancies for an HQ logistics support intern and a country logistics manager for Chad, which I posted earlier.

• ACTED is looking for a logistics support intern at their HQ, a logistician/security manager for Afghanistan, and country logistics managers for Chad and Congo (DRC).
• The Population Council is looking for a regional coordinator commodity/logistics for Nigeria (note that this vacancy is not confirmed on the Council’s own web site, and that I am not exactly sure how reliable a site called ‘Confabee’ can be…).
• A similar issue with this vacancy: logistics coordinator for Medair in Kampala (Uganda) — not to be found on Medair’s own website.
• As with this one: Médecins Du Monde is looking for a logistics coordinator for Darfur (Sudan). However, I give ReliefWeb slightly higher points for likely reliability than the previous two.
• Action Against Hunger (AAH or ACF) is looking for a logistics coordinator for Pakistan, and for logistic officers for various locations.
• Tear Fund is looking for an area logistics officer for the North of Afghanistan.
• And one that is a bit out of the ordinary: the rpc Group is looking for an aviation general manager based in Sudan.

An interesting article in the Ugandan newspaper The Daily Monitor, warning for a possible new polio outbreak. The most interesting part came almost at the end:

Dr Zaramba [the Director General of Health Services; MK] said the health ministry has enough vaccines to roll out an emergency vaccination exercise for children below five years later this month and in April. …

However, Dr Mbabazi [a risk analyst at the WHO country office; MK] said there are “serious health system and bureaucratic problems” that have led to the re-emergence of polio in the country that need to be fixed “real fast”. He cited bureaucratic delays that stopped the government from responding quickly to the WHO warning.

He said, “They are now talking about this upcoming emergency vaccination but as far as I know, there is no money for logistics to do it on a massive scale. Yet it is the best that can be done under the current circumstances.”

Let me reiterate this:

• Seven million Ugandans are at risk of contracting polio
• There are sufficient vaccines to vaccinate all of them
• But: there is no money to arrange the logistics of a vaccination campaign.

Yet another example of how ignoring health logistics will lead to disastrous consequences. When will we start to integrate logistics in our health planning?
